Texas mobilizes National Guard and increases patrols at energy facilities ports and border following early Sunday violence in Austin

Austin, Texas – Grief and defiance marked Governor Greg Abbott’s response to the deadly attack that unfolded early Sunday morning in Austin, an incident he described as a tragedy that has shaken the state but will not weaken it.

In a statement released later that day, Abbott said Texas is mourning alongside the families and loved ones of those who were killed. He also extended prayers for the individuals who were injured, expressing hope for their swift recovery. The governor noted that he and First Lady Cecilia Abbott are keeping the victims and their families in their thoughts during what he called a painful moment for the community.

Abbott said he has been in direct contact with Austin Mayor Kirk Watson and Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw Martin, offering the full support of the state to ensure that every available resource is deployed. According to the governor, state agencies stand ready to assist local authorities as the investigation continues and as the city works to restore a sense of security.

While emphasizing compassion for those affected, Abbott also delivered a firm warning. He said acts of violence, particularly those tied to tensions surrounding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, will not be tolerated in Texas. Anyone considering targeting Texans or the state’s critical infrastructure under the guise of international unrest, he said, should understand that Texas will respond “with decisive and overwhelming force.”

In response to the attack, Abbott directed the Texas Military Department to activate service members under what he described as Operation Fury Shield. Those personnel will coordinate with state and federal partners to help safeguard communities and key infrastructure sites. Patrols have been increased at vital energy facilities, ports, and along the Texas border. The state has also strengthened its cybersecurity presence and deployed unmanned aerial surveillance systems to monitor sensitive locations.

The governor further instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard to intensify patrols and surveillance efforts across the state. He said Texas is working closely with federal partners to ensure that every necessary tool and resource is in place to defend residents and infrastructure from potential threats.

Closer to the scene of the attack, Abbott ordered an increased law enforcement presence in downtown Austin’s 6th Street District during weekends. Additional patrols and personnel, he said, will help discourage criminal activity and provide visible security in an area known for heavy foot traffic and nightlife.

Throughout his statement, Abbott stressed resilience. He said the violence in Austin will not define Texas and will not break the resolve of its people. “Texans are strong,” he said, adding that the state will not be intimidated or terrorized.

As authorities continue their work, state leaders are balancing mourning with mobilization — offering support to victims while moving swiftly to tighten security across Texas.
