Austin, Texas—State leaders in Texas have agreed to give Del Rio, a border town, more money to improve its water infrastructure and assist activities at a neighboring military base.
Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Military Preparedness Commission announced that the city will get a $17 million loan from the Texas Military Value Revolving Loan Fund. The money will be used for two big projects: fixing up the San Felipe East Springs Containment Wall and making Del Rio’s water treatment plant bigger and more modern.
Officials say that the modifications will make the local water system more reliable and able to handle problems in the long term. This will help both residents and Laughlin Air Force Base.
Abbott said that the money was part of a bigger plan to help communities that help protect the country.
“These funds will strengthen the local community, support mission readiness at Laughlin, and advance our commitment to a strong military community across Texas. I thank the Texas Military Preparedness Commission for their investment and dedication to the future of Southwest Texas and our military communities,” Gov. Abbott said.
The project is using a revolving loan fund that is meant to help defense municipalities with infrastructure or economic projects that make adjacent military bases more strategically valuable.
The program is funded by the sale of general obligation bonds and focuses on projects that are seen as essential to keeping the military in Texas and running.
State and municipal leaders expect the renovations to provide long-term stability for Del Rio’s water capacity while also meeting the needs of Laughlin Air Force Base. This is because development and restoration work are planned around important water systems.
The statement demonstrates that Texas continues to concentrate on combining community development with military preparedness in areas where the two are closely related.
