Texas – Texas State Representative Briscoe Cain has proposed a measure that would drastically change the current landscape of gun control policies, therefore sparking the discussion on gun control on government properties in Texas. Proposed by a Republican politician, this measure seeks to make it illegal to prohibit licensed gun owners carrying weapons on any government-owned land.

The measure follows a divisive period following the 2024 State Fair of Texas, when a gun prohibition enforced by Dallas caused significant discussion. After the ban, which itself was a response to a shooting at the 2023 fair that resulted in three injuries, the fair, which is annually held at Fair Park—a land controlled by the city—became the venue for a contentious debate on gun rights.
The conflict grew more intense when Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton challenged the validity of the prohibition by suing the State Fair of Texas and Dallas. With organizations like the National Rifle Association and several Republican state legislators banding against the ban, the lawsuit highlighted an apparent gap between gun control proponents and gun rights supporters.

Rep. Cain’s proposed legislation guarantees that contractors and businesses utilizing government property cannot forbid weapons during events like the state fair, therefore strengthening gun rights. Proponents of the measure contend it guarantees gun owners’ capacity to defend themselves and upholds their constitutional rights. On the other hand, opponents express concerns about public safety, especially in packed or high-stress situations like public events and fairs.
