Wing’s smart drones transform shopping at Dallas-area malls this holiday season

Fort Worth, Texas – Shopping at two malls in Dallas-area will have a futuristic twist this holiday season. Working with Wing, a drone delivery business run by Alphabet (the parent company of Google), DoorDash is about to launch a new drone delivery service at Stonebriar Centre in Frisco and Hulen Mall in Fort Worth. Brookfield Properties is the large real estate company managing both malls.

Announced on Wednesday, the service will change the shopping experience for people living four miles around these malls. Customers of DoorDash ordering from more than 50 cooperating stores and restaurants can now opt to have their goods delivered by drone. This high-tech delivery option takes advantage of Wing’s smart drones, which can reach speeds up to 65 miles per hour and do deliveries in as little as 15 minutes.

From an elevation of roughly 150 feet, the highly accurate drones lower packages to the ground. This strategy not only accelerates the shipping process but also combines an innovative approach to package handling, therefore guaranteeing their quick and safe arrival at their destination.

According to Wing, this project signifies a historic first since it marks the first time an American retail mall is providing drone delivery. The move is a component of a larger push to include drone technology into mainstream delivery systems; currently, Mendocino Farms, Panera, and Jet’s Pizza have test projects involving restaurant chains.

Drone integration into mall delivery systems not only promises to improve consumer convenience but also fits more general technical trends aiming at lowering delivery times and prices. Still, these drone activities are subject to strict rules and call for some human supervision even with the superior technology. The drones also have a limited carrying capacity, which constrains the size and weight of potential deliveries.

This service extension in the Dallas area is built on the existing partnership between DoorDash and Wing, which started in Australia in 2022 and was brought to the United States earlier this year with a project in Christiansburg, Virginia.  The continuous teamwork shows how dedicated both businesses are to innovate in the delivery area and adjusting to customer needs for faster and more effective service alternatives.

Apart from providing services to mall customers, Wing also works with over 12 Walmart shops in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, so testing and improving its delivery abilities in several retail situations.

The trial program at Stonebriar Centre and Hulen Mall this holiday season could open the path for greater adoption in urban and suburban areas as drone technology develops and gets included into commercial delivery systems. This creative approach not only meets the need for ease of the current consumer but also indicates a future change towards more technology driven retail locations.
