Dallas, Texas – Dallas city officials are proposing a number of major layout changes for Dallas Love Field Airport in an aspirational move to prepare for rising travel needs and population increase. Members of the Dallas City Council Transportation and Infrastructure Committee examined four possible layouts meant to maximize the airport’s capacity and functionality while keeping to current gate restrictions.
Expanding the airport concourse by 50 feet, the first suggested layout alternative shifts pedestrian paths and upgrades baggage handling technologies. Along with other little changes to simplify passenger flow and enhance service delivery, this plan calls for the addition of new inbound baggage gadgets and a larger baggage claim space.
The second layout choice suggests a more comprehensive overhaul whereby a second level at the airport would be built. This layout would move security cameras and ticketing to the concourse level, extend the baggage claim into the current check-in area, and once again broaden the concourse by 50 feet. These developments are meant to improve the whole airport experience and allow more effective accommodation of growing passenger numbers.

The third choice includes moving the baggage drop-off point to Garage A and extending the baggage claim inside the present check-in area. Like the other options, this one calls for a 50-foot concourse addition. This option concentrates on best using current airport capacity to improve passenger flow and service.
The fourth layout option, which would move four gates to a recently built south concourse, would be perhaps the most extreme of the suggested modifications, therefore lowering the count of gates in the current concourse to 16. Although it suggests grouping the baggage claim stations to increase operational efficiency, this design does not call for extending the current concourse.
“With all this, we want to maximize the level of service and stay within that 20-gate limitation that we have,” said Dallas Director of Aviation Patrick Carreno, as reported by WFAA. “We want to get all the functional safety and security and efficiencies in there within reasonable cost and then we want to address the passenger needs and generate that revenue,” Carreno said.

The suggested enhancements fit the larger Dallas Love Field Master Plan, which also includes building new parking and rental car facilities, increasing concessions and bathrooms, and widening gate hold rooms. Roadway enhancements and an expanded airport entrance are also on the agenda to handle the increased vehicle traffic expected with the airport’s expansion.
These adjustments fit a new airline use and lease arrangement with carriers, especially Southwest Airlines. Although the current contract expires in 2028, the intended enhancements would be implemented in going forward even beyond that date.
Before choosing a preferable layout and development plan to show to the transportation and infrastructure committee of the city council, city officials will keep assessing these alternatives. According to Carreno, the municipal council is likely to be presented the whole capital upgrade project together with the new airline usage and lease agreement next year.
The suggested improvements seek to establish Dallas Love Field as a top-notch facility equipped to meet the future needs of the DFW area, which has seen steady increase. Serving around 17.5 million passengers in the fiscal year 2023 Love Field was identified as the busiest medium hub airport in the United States.
As the city looks forward to these revolutionary developments, the focus remains on preparing the airport not just for the immediate future but for generations of travelers to come.
