Dallas, Texas – Approving a $8 million grant for the project, the Dallas City Council has significantly moved toward the revival of the historic Forest Theater in South Dallas. This award is a major portion of an ambitious $81 million initiative to revitalize the 1940s-era theater closed since 2008. Rebuilding the Forest Theater is intended to transform the area into a vibrant cultural center that will help the neighborhood as well as the nearby businesses.

Council members approved the project—which includes rebuilding the theater’s original 500-seat auditorium and adding a 28,000-square-foot expansion—showing unanimous support. This addition will include a 175-seat black box theater, spaces for a café, and a rooftop deck. Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Bazaldua explained that the reconstruction will inject life back into a “cherished asset” for the city and generate economic opportunities, artistic programs, and other cultural advantages to South Dallas.
“This project brings a cherished asset back to life while creating jobs and cultural opportunities for our community,” Bazaldua remarked.
Forest Forward, a company committed to using art and culture as means of social justice and community development, will oversee the development of the Forest Theater. Elizabeth Wattley, President of Forest Forward, explained the vision, stating that the theater’s transformation will do more than just revive an iconic building—it will strengthen the economic and cultural landscape of South Dallas.
“Forest Theater’s revitalization will strengthen South Dallas economically and culturally,” Wattley affirmed, adding that the venue will host over 140 events annually, attracting a diverse range of performances and gatherings that will draw locals and visitors alike.
Designed to spur development in underprivileged areas, the city’s 2023 Infrastructure Investment Fund provides a significant portion of the financing. Aimed at encouraging investments where most needed, Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert hailed the project as a shining example of the city’s revised Economic Development Policy.
“This project showcases the impact of our updated Economic Development Policy,” Tolbert noted. “We’re proud to support Forest Forward and help restore this landmark.”
