Alex Dee from Fate, Texas, sentenced to prison for operating sophisticated pyramid scheme with two other men

Fate, Texas – Three individuals running a complex pyramid scheme under the cover of a marketing company have been sentenced to prison in a major crackdown on fraudulent business practices. Alex Dee, Brian Kaplan, and Jerrold Mauer’s punishment for their roles in scamming thousands of participants in what seemed to be a profitable business opportunity was confirmed by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Operating under the name 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle (8FDL), the company—which was registered in Wyoming—falsely claimed to be an online marketing agency. Prominent founders Alex Dee, 50 from Fate, Texas; Brian Kaplan, 53 from Fort Collins, Colorado; and Jerrold Mauer, 58 from North Bellmore, New York, promoted the organization as a venue where members may make significant amounts of money by selling memberships. However, the business’ main source of income came from new member recruiting rather than from the selling of approved goods or services.

The three were able to attract more than 2,800 people who together lost an estimated $23.5 million from January 2017 till March 2019. The company model mostly depended on deceptive marketing strategies and promised almost impossible income sources. The court records show that most members did not make a single sale, therefore underscoring the fraudulent nature of the business.

Justice officials revealed that the materials sent to 8FDL members—mostly videos on online marketing and self-help—had minimal value and essentially worked to give the company false credibility. According to the research, the actual goal was to make money via ongoing member recruiting and the selling of more memberships.

Legally speaking, Alex Dee got the toughest sentence; a court mandated a three-year prison term and a forfeiture of $1.8 million. Along with forfeiture of $2.8 million and $1.5 million respectively, Brian Kaplan and Jerrold Mauer both got sentences of one year and ten months. Reflecting the seriousness of their offenses, their guilty pleas—which entered late 2023 and mid-2024—were for conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

For the U.S. Department of Justice, the sentences of these people represent a major triumph in its continuous fight against financial fraud and consumer protection against false corporate practices. This case reminds everyone of the legal limits on which marketing activities are allowed and the harsh penalties for those who decide to openly ignore them.

Regarding any preparations for restitution for the victims of the 8 Figure Dream Lifestyle program, no more specifics have been released. Now the community and the victims wait for more government intervention to potentially offset some of the significant financial losses suffered. For regulatory authorities emphasizing stricter restrictions and monitoring of internet marketing activities, this case is an invaluable source of reference.
