Rockwall, Texas – In a solemn ceremony filled with heartfelt tributes and deep community respect, Officer Cooper Dawson of the Greenville Police Department was laid to rest at Lakepointe Church in Rockwall on Tuesday. Officer Dawson, aged 27, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on November 26, leaving behind a grieving family and a united community.
Starting at 10 a.m., the program drew hundreds of law enforcement personnel gathered to celebrate one of their own. The sight as they went past Dawson’s casket was a moving reminder of the daily risks taken by those in uniform. Opening the ceremony with a prayer, a chaplain honored Dawson as “a servant and a protector” of the community, therefore establishing a respectful tone for the events.
Reflecting on Dawson’s major influence on the department, Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith delivered a touching eulogy.
“Cooper changed the dynamic of our team. His enthusiasm changed the way we train,” Smith said to WFAA, highlighting Dawson’s professionalism and dedication. Often referred to among his peers as a “officer’s officer,” Dawson was loved as a family man in addition to his dedication to service.
Cooper’s wife and mother to their three children, Aubrey Dawson, paid an emotional tribute that resonated with everyone there. When Aubrey thought back on the heritage of service in her family—her father and husband had both worked for local police departments—her thoughts highlighted the personal sacrifices associated with the badge.
“You gave everything and I will carry that love in my heart always,” she said, her voice laden with both pride and sorrow.
Along with a memorial movie and music covering Dawson’s life and service, which honored his legacy and dedication, the event featured poignant words from Dawson’s sister-in-law.

Dawson’s remains were carried solemnly to their last resting place at Resthaven Funeral Home following the service. Observed by community members paying their respects, the procession—a visible display of honor and memory—moved east along the East Frontage Road to John King Boulevard.
Officer Dawson’s end of watch came tragically on November 26, after he was fatally shot pursuing a suspect. In addition to representing a major loss for the Greenville Police Department, his death marked the end of a century-long run without an on-duty death within the agency. Along with the local community, this sobering reminder of the risks law enforcement officials face drew attention and tributes from all around North Texas and state leaders, including Governor Greg Abbott.
In the days following his death, the community’s support was palpable, with a spontaneous memorial rising in front of the Greenville police station and numerous police departments expressing their condolences and support. Such actions highlighted the close relationship between law officers and the people they protect as well as people’s grief for a hero passed too soon.
